Trip to Grundy, VA

with 4 comments

As promised, below is yet another panoramic picture that I stitched together from 22-24 pictures using the very simple, free, addictive and easy to use freeware Autostitch. The panoramic was taken at the Stateline Overlook point at the Breaks Interstate Park. The reason why it’s called the Stateline Overlook, is because you look out over the borders of Kentucky and Virginia. That’s how far away I was from Northern Virginia. Freakin’ Kentucky.

Amanda and I left on a Friday night around 8pm to avoid the traffic. The long 7 hour road trip from Arlington to Grundy, Va went faster than I expected, but we did make sure to stop at a Wal-Mart along the way to pick up the latest Harry Potter book. We didn’t arrive until 3am. We stayed at Amanda’s uncle’s house right in Grundy, and fortunately Uncle Carl is a master chef of breakfast, so we enjoyed his breakfast and then hit the Breaks Interstate Park. Grundy is an interesting town. Since it’s a coal mining town, on the way in we saw the glowing coke ovens (here’s a picture of them not glowing). The town is evolving everyday and is in the process of being moved up away from the often flooded river, so there were huge construction vehicles roaming around town as well as faces of mountains sliced off to make room for businesses and homes.

I snapped a few more shots, so check the rest of them out in my Grundy, VA set on Flickr.
