Keeping with tradition, Amanda and I try to get away for a night or weekend to a place that’s within a short driving distance and has some fun things to do. Last year it was Culpeper, VA to check out some wineries and stay in a B&B. The town of Culpeper itself didn’t have much to do, but the wineries were was fun and relaxing.
This year I wanted to go to a bigger city, and with about a three hour time limit, we ended up with Philadelphia, PA. I got a ton of recommendations from friends and co-workers that either have visited there recently, grew up near there, or went to school there. We stayed in the Old City area at the Hilton Garden Inn which was directly above the Reading Terminal Market where Rachel Ray ate at the Down Home Diner on $40/Day. I’m going to sound like I’m working for the Food Network soon, because we hit up Tony Lukes for some cheesesteaks where Bobby Flay taped one of his Throwdowns…We got to do all the touristy stuff like Independence Hall, and the Liberty Bell, but I think the food highlight of the weekend was stumbling upon Vintage Wine Bar. Prices weren’t cheap, but the food was excellent, and we even had a celebrity spotting – Mayor Royce from The Wire. Amanda spotted him right when he walked in, but it helped a little that he was wearing a jacket that said “The Wire” on the back. Kinda cheesy.
The last day, I ran up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and posed with Rocky before meeting some friends on South Street for another round of cheesesteaks at Jim’s Steaks. Eating, drinking and sightseeing was a great way to break in 2007.
